STRAY by Fatcat – Delicious Food with a Creative Twist

STRAY by Fatcat – Delicious Food with a Creative Twist

Popping Spheres

Bold. That’s how we’d classify STRAY by Fatcat after a delicious makan-session. A purveyor of creativity, exotic and unique tastes when it comes to food, we knew we had to head down to STRAY by Fatcat to have a taste of their daring cuisine. From Alcoholic Butterbeer to their Instagram-Worthy Popping Spheres, Fatcat provided a dance of flavours on our palette that few restaurants could match at an amazing price point.

1
WAGYU BLACK PEPPER BOWL 黑椒和牛饭, $22

The meal started off with their famous Wagyu Black Pepper Bowl. A dish that is a traditional crowd-pleaser, Fatcat put a creative spin on it by adding Pink Ginger Foam. The combination of perfectly seared beef and onsen egg is hard to go wrong and Fatcat had it down pat. The ginger foam provided a refreshing change of taste; light, fluffy and pleasantly slightly sour. Opinions are split on this – half were enchanted by this gutsy combination, and the other half didn’t enjoy it mixed, but alone.

6
Butterbeer, $12

As self-proclaimed hardcore fans of Harry Potter, and as people who have tried various butterbeer options in Universal Studios and Singapore, we knew we had to order this. $12 gave us half a pint. The cream on top was slightly too foamy, but smelled amazing. Bits of grated butter could be tasted with every sip, and that was fantastic. However, the sweet aroma of the cream with the bitterness of the beer was not a combination we enjoyed, but I feel it would still be a pleasant delight for many.

7
KEEP POPPING SPHERES (ALCOHOLIC) 一口爆, $12

To cleanse our palate after a delectable meal, we decided to go HAM on the desserts. Next on the menu was Keep Popping Spheres ($12), in which we went with all 3. The waitress kindly advised on starting on the lightest to the darkest in level of intensity.

All 3 spheres were a delight to pop in your mouth – we can really tell that STRAY’s chefs put in the effort to ensure that mouth-feel/texture is up to standard. The Lychee 荔枝 Sphere (Lychee, Rose Wine, Lime) had a very concentrated taste which was slightly overwhelming. It had a thick and velvety texture and had barely any alcohol taste within. The Blood 红酒 Sphere (Mandarin, Shiraz, Lemon) was a beautiful wine red. I personally enjoyed my wine savored, and the Blood Sphere showed that wine can be mixed with various liquids to be made even better.

The Lime 青柠檬 Sphere (Lime, Rum, Osmanthus) was my favourite of all – a refreshing taste swarms your mouth in an instant giving an influx of flavours. Slightly more sour than expected, it complimented the alcohol within making it seem like a non-alcholic dessert.. And the pop was very addictive.

5
BLACK & GOLD 咸蛋黑炭松饼, $18

With Salted Egg somehow still being the rage and as a personal fan of IRVINS Salted Egg myself, I knew I had to try and see STRAY‘s take on this dish. As Fatcat was an ice cream parlour before opening their restaurant, I had high expectations for this dessert.

The dish looked super appetizing. Black and gold never goes wrong, and the plating was IG perfection. Salted egg topped with delicious sauce trickling down every crevice of the soft serve onto the charcoal waffle was almost like casting a spell on all of us – with us frantically rushing to cut a slice.

The combination promised to be savoury and sweet – but I found it more savoury and to my liking. I can almost sigh while thinking of devouring this once more. At $18, the ice cream really felt like it’s worth the price – this was a dish done well with no cut corners. Real salted egg with ice cream truly made an amazing combination.

4
“CALAMANSI” 分子料理.桔子爆,

The Calamansi was the most underwhelming dish of all. With an exterior of chocolate and interior of lime, it was simply pure sourness overwhelming the dish.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

AS EASY AS ABC 儿时回忆, ($30) was a great finale to a great meal. Apple Yogurt, Beetroot and Carrot was perfectly re-crafted into a delicious dish which hits the nail on the head for taste, texture and performance. The waitress pours liquid nitrogen of Apple Yogurt, making for an amazing display of snow.

Wow

We were all scrambling for a taste of everything – the carrots were disguised as rocks and beetroot was a combination of textures – something like chewy ice cream. It was great tasting and super fun to eat – we didn’t know what flavours were hidden, and where, and had a good time finding everything out. This dish itself is worth taking the trip down to STRAY, and was the highlight of the meal.

With a surprise in every meal and a twist in every corner, STRAY by Fatcat are masters at their craft. It must be a great time being a chef here with literally no limits. This is a great place for dates with the food itself being a topic of conversation. For adventurous foodies, this exactly what you’ve been waiting for.

The Essen @ Pinnacle, Tanjong Pagar

The Essen @ Pinnacle, Tanjong Pagar

20171203_180853

Working at the CBD area and finding an affordable food place in a comfortable ambience can be tough if you’re at Tanjong Pagar. A regular hangout spot, we visited The Essen @ Pinnacle (Pinnacle at Duxton), an upscale “hawker center” which is fully air-conditioned, provides free seating and is a great place to be to chill with friends or to go for a meal.

essen

The Essen provides indoor and outdoor seating, and is has a variety of cuisines including Vietnamese, Thai, French and Western. It also serves alcohol; beer from the tap or bottled, wine and ciders, on top of your regular canned drink options. There’s something for everyone here!

Salted Egg Wings, $12.90 for 12

We started with appetizers from Two Wings, and opted for the Salted Egg option. Usually having the original, the Salted Egg option was truly addictive – it was the first dish we finished – the fried chicken was tossed in sauce (not drizzled on), and retains its crispiness while maintaining a juicy interior. Great on its own, you can choose to add a spicy twist with their home-made chilli sauce, which was delicious, spicy, and slightly reminded me of Ban Mian chilli. At S$12.90, it was decently priced. However, my pet peeve is that the 12 pieces comes in halves – so you’re only getting 6 full wings, which makes this pretty expensive.

20171203_181607

Parma Ham, Cheese Pizza from La Stalla, $34 for 2

The next round of appetisers comes from La Stalla. We ordered a Parma Ham and Cheese Pizza, enough to feed 6 of us for round 2 of appetisers. We collected it after a short wait, but was not blown away. Personally, I found the crust to be too dry at the edges, and the pizza too thin. On the Cheese Pizza, it feels like I’m eating cheap melted cheese. The Parma Ham pizza was significantly better, but nothing to scream about. Overall, average pizzas good enough to pass, but not something that I’ll come back for.

20171203_181051

Nachos Con Carne, Level 2 (Hot) Spiciness, Burger Buddies, $10.9

Burger Buddies is my favourite restaurant in The Essen, but their Nachos are pretty subpar. The Nachos has a stale texture with no crunch, and it quickly became an abandoned dish as everyone was turned off after one taste. The chilli on top is pretty alright, but overall I would not order this again, especially at this price point. However, they serve AMAZING burgers, which is my main course (later in this post).

20171203_190241

Tuna Salad, Garçons $12.50

Next on the list, Tuna Salad from Garçons, a French store that serves premium quality food at a low price. In my excitement, I took a blur photo. The tuna was EXCELLENT and was one of the best I’ve had. They also served eggs on the side in a Japanese Soft Boiled style, which went well with the entire dish. Everyone agreed that this was one of the better dishes of the night and at $12.50, offered excellent value.

20171203_190247

Foie Gras, Garçons, $16.90

Again from Garçons, the foie gras/salad combination was an excellent dish. The foie gras was perfectly grilled on the outside with a creamy interior, and provided a perfect combination with toasted bread. This was enough to whet my appetite, and is a dish that will keep me coming back for more.

20171203_190236Cheeseburger (add egg), Burger Buddies, $13.9 + $1

The Cheeseburger from Burger Buddies is easily the tastiest, most value for money and one of the best burgers in Singapore. Using premium beef and a choice of doneness for your burger (I went with medium rare), the burger, in my opinion, is a better burger choice than any other burger place in Singapore, easily crushing Fat Boys and has better value than Omakase Burger. With an egg added, the ooze from the yolk provided a good blend with its toasted bun and quality ingredients. With a choice of fries or salad on the side and its price point, it is no wonder that this is one of the more popular stores in The Essen.

20171203_190243

Pad Thai | Viethai, 8.90

The Pad Thai at Viethai was relatively average, but its strongest point is that it is probably the cheapest meal here. I would select other options unless I have a strong craving for Pad Thai.

20171203_185604

Our entire meal was paired with 2 bottles of wine and ciders available at The Essen’s bar/drink store, making The Essen a whole package worth coming for.

20171203_190250

With its variety, affordable food and comfortable indoor (air-conditioned) or outdoor seats to choose from, the Essen is family, friends and work-friendly place to hang out at. With options for everyone, it’s easy to come to a place that is accessible, affordable and chill. With a projector showing the latest soccer game, alcohol and many options, The Essen is my favourite affordable place in Tanjong Pagar.

Top 10 Tips for Clubbing in Seoul, Korea

Top 10 Tips for Clubbing in Seoul, Korea

20170709_030750

So you’re ready to go clubbing in Korea.. here are the top 10 tips as someone who has been clubbing in Korea often.

1. GO AROUND 10:30PM

IMG_20170723_031803

Don’t bother going too early – you’re only going to be greeting by an empty space. Only go early to get your stamps, or around 10:30pm to avoid the lines while watching people enter. The crowd comes in from 11pm, and peaks around 1am.

2. GUYS ARE AGGRESSIVE

20170715_023436.jpg
Guys WILL pull your friends as they walk, catcall or aggressively approach you, so always go as a group, unless you’re into that sort of thing.

3. BRING YOUR ID

20170701_0350241.jpg
Every bar and club checks for an ID – ensure that you are at least 18 years old, or 19 in Korean age – and keep your ID safely with you.

4. BAR HOP

20170702_013600.jpg
Seoul has so much to offer, and simply staying in one bar is a waste. Try the multitude of bars and the various unique concepts literally littered throughout Hongdae/Itaewon. Also visit the bars that are not on the ground level (2nd/3rd floors) as these are the bars that are usually nicer.

5. CLUB HOP

20170709_030750.jpg

Every club offers something different, from its music, its people to its decoration and atmosphere, at an entry fee from 10,000KRW, it is relatively cheap to go to 2-3 clubs a night to experience everything.

6. DRINK AT THE CONVENIENCE STORE

IMG_20170705_225809
The convenience stores everywhere provides cheap soju from 1000KRW, and is a cheap and easy way to get buzzed if you cannot find a good bar, or need a little more kick before entering the club.

7. DRINKS ARE CHEAP(ISH) IN CLUBS

20170714_0029291.jpg
In comparison to Singapore standards, club drinks are about 50% of the prices you pay – but expensive by Korean standards. If you need a kick and don’t want to spend money, go to a convenience store.

8. LEAVE AT DAYLIGHT

20170722_052338
Clubs close pretty late, from 4am to 7am, and I’ve always left the club between 5-7AM, and go for supper/breakfast after. A female friend of mine went for BBQ at 7AM. Live like a Korean and return to your hotel in the morning – watching the sunrise after clubbing is a truly unique experience.

9. HAIL LIKE CRAZY FOR TAXIS

20170701_044759.jpg
Leaving at peak hour timings (4-6AM, or if it rains) means fighting for cabs. Always find a good spot (be careful, people WILL steal your cabs) walking distance away, and always ask for the meter – although if you’re too tired, you might just end up paying the fee requested. Some drivers refuse to take you if you’re not going towards the direction they like, but keep trying. I usually get a cab between 10-40 minutes.

10. EAT RAMYEON, DRINK DAWN

Respect This Man

I cannot emphasize how important it is to drink Dawn – the ultimate hangover drink. Consume a can of Dawn (tastes like Raisin) to prevent or mitigate a hangover – that’s how we made it to Lotte World the next day after drinking and 3 hours of sleep.

Ramyeon after clubbing also tastes 10x better, we swear its almost magical.

Seoul, Korea: 8 Best Clubs and Bars, 2017

Seoul, Korea: 8 Best Clubs and Bars, 2017

best

Recently, I went to Korea for a month on exchange – and it was a WILD month. The number of friendships forged and experienced gained is uncountable, and we spent every weekday night at a bar, and weekend night at a club. Here’s my top recommendations for drinking there, as well as tips and favourite clubs in Korea.

Rule of Thumb: Never stop at 1 bar or club because there is so much to see, try and visit. One night is not sufficient to fully experience clubbing/drinking in Korea. For a full Korean experience, visit ALL these places in one night in the vicinity you are in.

1. BAR: Castle Praha, Hongdae

Looking for a cool bar for Instagram? Castle Praha was one of the first bars I went to in Korea. It had an AMAZING exterior that resembled a castle, and a spacious interior. Castle Praha has good beer and finger food, and would be one of the first bars I’d hit when bar-hopping in Hongdae. Although slightly on the pricier side, Korean drinks are still generally affordable, and I would be willing to pay for this – especially when on vacation. Castle Praha is also quiet, making ita good place to chill with family or to bring someone on a date.

TLDR; Great atmosphere and decor, slightly pricey, good to chill.

2. CLUB: Cream, Hongdae

Cream at Hongdae is one of the quieter clubs in Hongdae. Upon entry (10,000KRW), a free gift is given – I got a hat the first time, a t-shirt on the second. Club Cream plays Hip-Hop music with a Live DJ, and has a bar right in the middle of the dance floor for easy access to drinks. Alcohol is also extremely cheap at 10,000KRW for 3 yagerbombs, or 10,000KRW for 3 tequila shots. Toilets are also clean and the location is easily accessible. Despite it being a relatively quiet place with emptier dance floors, it became a place we went to often because of the cheap drinks and chill atmosphere. Who says no to cheap drinks and Hip Hop, right?

Why you should go: Cheap drinks, free gifts, hip hop.
Why you should avoid: Emptier than usual club, small.
Price Range: 3000KRW-10,000KRW

3. CLUB: NB2, Hongdae

NB2, also known as “Noise Basement,” is one of the hottest clubs in Hongdae, with 2 branches, the other being NB1. It’s owned and operated by YG Entertainment, and is always crowded with an extremely long line. Entry fee is slightly pricier at around 20,000KRW (with drink coupons), and the place attracts a young crowd probably because of its association with YGE. NB2 also plays great Hip Hop music – but it was extremely congested due to its popularity. However, NB2 is definitely a club to not miss, and one that I thoroughly enjoyed visiting – there is even reported sightings of YG artists who frequent the place!

Why you should go: YG Entertainment owned, good music, chance to see YG celebrities
Why you should avoid: Long lines to enter, crowded
Price Range: 10,000KRW-30,000KRW

4. CLUB: Club Made, Itaewon

Club Made at Itaewon is the BEST club to be at if you would like a selection between Hip Hop and EDM, and is the best club in Itaewon. As you enter, you are greeted by a long bar in the middle of the club, where you can redeem your free drink tickets from paying the entrance fee. On each end of the bar, there are 2 different segments of the club that plays different music, and you can hop around each side to where you prefer to be. Made plays both great EDM and Hip Hop, and is also a place where there are more foreigners due to its location, known as a foreigner hangout. Made is also one of our go-to places for clubbing due to the variety it offers to our group with different music tastes. If I had only one club choice, it would be Made.

Why you should go: Has EDM and HipHop, good mix of foreigners and locals
Why you should avoid:
Pricier, long waiting times to enter (30mins-1hour)
Price Range:

5. BAR: 232, Itaewon

232 at Itaewon is a fancy bar with an amazing interior. Cushioned sofa chairs, wooden tables and vintage decoration all around makes for an amazing atmosphere. Drinks are not as cheap (characteristic of Itaewon), at about 12,000KRW onwards for a cocktail. However, it is worth coming for a drink or 2 to soak in the great atmosphere, and it is also quite a hidden spot with no tourists. It’s a good place to go with friends prior to hitting Made.

Why you should go: Great atmosphere and decor
Why you should avoid:
Expensive

6. BAR/CLUB: The Fountain, Itaewon

The Fountain is one of my favourite spots in Seoul. Upon the recommendation of one of my Korean friends, we went there from 1am-5am. It is a combination of bars on the side and a dance floor in the middle. The songs are more “old school” like Backstreet Boys, bringing you back to the 2000s. when I went, and the place has a constant line and crowd of both locals and foreigners.

There are 2 levels; the first being a large dance floor in the middle, and the second being a smaller dance floor on the second level. The Fountain is simply beautiful, and Instagram worthy from its entrance to its interior. Despite some negative reviews I’ve read online, it gave me a great experience with a friendly bartender and strict bouncers. Entrance check is thorough, only allowing me entry with a NRIC and not my Driving ID (Singapore). I also read online that they are pretty racist and disallowing of people of darker skin color or certain ethnicities, but it was not something I experienced.

Drinks are pricier (but still okay on a SG budget), but not unaffordable and worth paying for its great vibes, music and vast space. It’s a great place to pregame before entering a real club, but we loved it so much that we stayed here all the way. The Fountain is a refreshing change to the regular jammed packed clubs with loud EDM/Hip Hop, and is definitely a place you must not miss in Itaewon, or in Korea.

Why you should go: Amazing decoration, 2 dance floors, meet foreigners, 2000s Music
Why you should avoid:
Expensive, overly strict bouncers, 2000s Music
Price Range:
12,000KRW-30,000KRW

7. MY FAVOURITE BAR: Kodachaya, Hongdae

Kodachaya, located within walking distance from Sangsu Station (or Hongik University Station) is THE place to be for pre-drinks. With cheap alcohol and delicious food and multiple locations nation-wide, they have a unique self-service concept, where you can grab your own drinks from the fridges, making this place immensely popular. On top of that, a variety of Korean/Japanese food is offered in a rustic Japanese environment, making you feel like you’re in a different era, with a concept that is different from other bars.

As you enter, you are given an order tag (something like Ramen Champion’s concept) which you can use to order food and drink. Their signature dish, the kimchi fried rice with cheese and egg is a crowd-pleaser, leading to us ordering multiple of the same dish throughout our drinking session. They also offer a variety of food, from Japanese Sashimi to Korean Odeng.

Kodachaya also gives free bottled mineral water which you are free to take at any time, as much as you want. It also has a signature entrance that is reminiscent of a Subway station sign, making it stand out from the crowd. Its large seating capacity means no/short wait, despite it being constantly crowded. The freedom and flexibility Kodachaya gives, along with its warm atmosphere, good location, and tables catered to both big and small groups makes this place a huge hit for all groups of all ages to hang out in, and is my #1 favourite spot in Seoul that you CANNOT miss!

Why you should go: Take your own drinks, affordable and good food, great for all groups and ages, my favourite spot.
Why you should avoid:

8. BAR: Daddy J, Anam

Daddy J’s is a small and cosy bar located at Anam, near Korea University and is our first spot nightly because of its location near the dormitories, excellent service, facilities and low prices. Daddy J’s is not a place that tourists would know of or go to, simply because it is out of the way at Anam Station. Daddy J’s boasts cheap Hookah, cheap beer jugs and 1500KRW soju. They have a darts machine, a beer pong table and a Macbook where you can select your own music on YouTube. It is the first place that we went to get buzzed before heading to clubs/bars in Hongdae/Itaewon, and is a lowest-cost place in the list for drinks with friends. It is also decorated with a chalkboard surrounding the pub, allowing anyone to write on it. Tables are always readily available, and the place has a warm environment, welcoming to anyone, and a good place to meet people from Korea University.

Why you should go: Very cheap drinks and hookah, beer pong table, darts machine
Why you should avoid:
Far, university area. Small. Smells like Hookah.
Price Range:
1,500KRW-10,000KRW

ALWAYS buy one of these (at any convenience store) after a night of drinking, as it helps IMMENSELY with hangovers. Koreans swear by it, and now, I too believe.

Bumping into Haha at Hongdae

There are many other bars and clubs that I went to in Korea, from Thursday Party to Club M2 etc., but the places in the list are my favourites, and are places that I would definitely visit again.

Food In The Bay – USA VS Singapore (Part 1)

Food In The Bay – USA VS Singapore (Part 1)

cali

After hearing about all the good things about America, I carefully planned to visit San José for a month to thoroughly experience its food and sights, and also to visit my roommate from Korea University’s Summer Program who’s from San José. America is a wondrous place with a multitude of restaurants. Some took my breath away, whilst some of the restaurants made me wonder – how do they still exist? Here’s a breakdown of my experience, with Singapore’s food as a benchmark against what I’ve had in The Bay – as well as quick reviews of my impressions on the food I’ve had.

1. IN-N-OUT BURGER

In-N-Out Burger, California

In-N-Out is the icon of the West Coast, and one of the first things mentioned when talking about California. Located just beside the airport (a quick drive), In-N-Out was the first place I visited, and is also the place that I was so hyped about. From a $2.75 cheeseburger to a $3.90 double patty, In-N-Out is THE most affordable and value for money item in California. Using never frozen meat, freshly sliced potatoes and toasted buns, In-N-Out screams quality. I was so excited from lining up to holding the burger in my hands, and was almost shaking from finally visiting the legendary In-N-Out burger that everyone raved about. From the first bite, I was blown away – the buns were perfectly toasted giving a light crunch with each bite. Every patty was succulent and juicy, and you could taste the difference with every mouth. American cheese was melted between the beef patties, gluing the meat together, allowing for optimum efficiency in devouring the burger, which was inhaled in under a minute. It was accompanied by Animal Style fries from a freshly cut potato, and smothered in In-N-Out’s not-so-secret sauce with grilled onions, and completed with free flow soda, with options like Dr. Pepper, Cola etc.; common drinks found in almost every fast food restaurant in Cali. They also offer shakes, and you can order a Black & White, which is a famous and popular choice at Shake Shack. The vanilla/chocolate layered combo is fantastic, but I feel that Shake Shack has a slightly thicker shake compared to In-N-Out.

Customizations
In-N-Out also offers customization to any style or variation you’d like – no tomatoes, grilled onions, raw onions etc.
What I tried:
1. Patty, cheese, raw onion, tomato
2. Patty, cheese, raw onion
3. Patty, cheese, grilled onion
4. Patty, cheese, animal styled
My favourite variation ended up being option 4, the Animal Styled Burger, created with no additional charges. The Animal Styled Burger also seems to be something commonly ordered, with them knowing how to create it without any further instructions. It is a double double covered in their Animal Styled sauce (the same sauce used for their fries). In-N-Out ended up being my go-to snack, meal and overall favourite of the trip.

In-N-Out VS Shake Shack
Of course, no In-N-Out review can be complete without a comparison to Shake Shack. Among these, I tried Shake Shack first and was blown away. In-N-Out did not give me the same mind-blowing reaction, probably because it was so hyped up by my friends. Apart from Shake Shack’s potato buns, I generally feel that In-N-Out is a better choice. I went to Shake Shack in LA, and after multiple meals of In-N-Out, Shake Shack was no longer able to hold its crown.
Similarities:
1. Quality patties
2. Same cheese
3. Short wait for the burger, long lines to order
Differences:
There is fierce competition here.
1. Shake Shack’s 🏆 potato buns tastes significantly better and has a consistency which I prefer in comparison to In-N-Out’s grilled buns.
2. Shake Shack 🏆 is also more modern looking, with better advertising and accessibility with chains worldwide. In-N-Out keeps an “old school” look, consistent in every outlet.
3. Shake Shack 🏆 also offers a better shake and more options with their burgers, offering chicken as an option to people who cannot eat beef.
4. Price, price, price. In-N-Out 🏆 is simply insane value. The price you pay for a single burger can get you a whole meal at In-N-Out.
5. Shake Shack offers Crinkle Cut Fries, and In-N-Out does regular cut fries. However, both fries to me are still not as good as McDonalds.

Overall, despite strong competition from Shake Shack, both offer a decent burger, with marginal differences not worth the large price point difference. However with the quality and price considered, and with a pretty similar quality patty, In-N-Out🏆 is an easy win for me at $3.90 for a double double VS $7.45 for a double Shackburger. Writing this post actually gave me an intense craving, and I thoroughly understand why In-N-Out is synonymous with California.

2. CINNABON BAKERY

20171005_172408.jpg

Cinnabon, Great Mall, Milpitas

Cinnabon is a popular snack/bakery in USA, with its main rival being Auntie Anne’s in Great Mall. They make phenomenal cinnamon rolls, offered in various sizes. It was a refreshing change from the Auntie Anne pretzels that I’m used to, covered in cinnamon sugar. Cinnabon offers a warm, fragrant bun with sweet, sugary icing on top that makes a quick and delicious calorie-dense snack as we were shopping in the Great Mall. It also offered a sweet perfume to everyone within a 5-10M radius, providing a delicious scent to the mall. I remember being blown away by how good it was upon the first bite, and craved it once again the next day. It was definitely a refreshing change, but definitely something I would avoid eating too often due to its high sugar/calorie content.

3. YARD HOUSE

Yard House, Santana Row

Yard House prides itself as being a restaurant/bar that offers the world’s biggest selection of draft beer. We went there on our first night, absolutely exhausted after the long flight. Yard House is primarily a beer place, offering an exhaustive menu, but with pretty average food. They have, however, great onion rings and beer. We ordered a Half Yard (pictured) and thoroughly enjoyed the beer. Yard House also provides a great atmosphere, with a busy crowd and TVs all around, making it a great place for socializing with friends and family.

4. COSTCO

Costco, Raleigh

Costco Wholesale, a membership-only wholesale grocery store offers AMAZING food and portions. At $1.50 per hotdog + drink (free refills), Costco delivers great value at low prices. I tried their hotdogs, pizza, ice cream and chicken bake. I’ve heard great things about Costco’s Kirkland brand, and it never failed to deliver in their quality food. Costco’s hotdog also easily beats everything I’ve had in Singapore. With a length about as long as my forearm, topped with onions and ketchup, the hotdog is juicy and absolutely delicious. Personally, it is one of the best hot dogs I’ve had – easily smashing Singapore’s IKEA’s hotdog to the ground. I’ve had it for too many meals – I loved it that much. I also devoured 2 hotdogs for lunch which left me extremely full. Costco also offered a great slice of pizza, which is about twice the size of a slice in Singapore. We also ordered cooked, cold shrimp on the side. It was sweet and at $13, gave a generous portion. Costco ended up being the to-go place after gym for us, or whenever we wanted to save money. Their food easily beat most food I’ve tried in America, surprising me with the quality, size and price.

5. TREATBOT

Treatbot, San Pedro Square

Homemade ice cream? I’m sold! Located in Downtown San Jose, Treatbot is an ice cream truck inside San Pedro square offering handmade ice cream. San Pedro square is also conveniently located with a 10 minute walk away from the SAP Stadium, and offers a variety of food and beer, with a great atmosphere to hang out in.
On the recommendation of our American friend, we visited Treatbot and was greeted with a long continuous line. Reaching at about 4pm, their most popular flavours were already sold out. I ordered the Chocolate Rain flavour, which is handmade chocolate ice cream with chunky chocolate chips. Their ice cream tastes amazing. It was not as good as Penny’s ice cream or Tinpot, but it is definitely one of the better ice cream options. They also offered a variety of ways to enjoy it, and I chose my ice cream to be wedged between 2 homemade chocolate chip cookies. The homemade ice cream + homemade chocolate chip cookies made an impressive combination. The warm cookies were great on its own – sweet, soft and starchy, while the ice cream was thick, creamy, chocolatey and flavourful. After finishing this deadly combination, I had to grab a bottle of water – but it was totally worth it. I only regret not having the more popular flavours, and will definitely return to try it again.

6. THE HALAL GUYS

The Halal Guys, Plant Shopping Center

The Halal Guys offered a refreshing change to our usual meats and burgers that we had every other meal. As a Singaporean, I wanted to see how the American rendition of a Halal meal is like. I’ve also heard fantastic reviews about Halal Guys – how it used to be a food stand in New York, to an international franchise now – and how everyone speaks greatly about their legendary White Sauce. Even as someone who regularly eats Halal food in Singapore, The Halal Guys provided a tasty, filling meal with a generous portion of Turmeric rice, cabbage and tomatoes, a choice/mix of grilled beef/chicken covered with their white sauce and BBQ sauce, and topped with 2 pieces of gyros. It was one of the best meals I’ve had in America at its price point of $7-$8. The cabbage/tomato combination provided a sweet crunch with each mouth of rice, with the very tender meat providing an aromatic flavour, topped with the creamy white sauce and BBQ smell made for a stunning combination. It was so much so that we went out of the way thrice – to have that for supper and to even buy some for breakfast the next morning. The Halal Guys is such a simple conception, but provides such satisfaction at a low price point, and despite how it looks, tastes AMAZING. Daniel says that he always tries to have it once a week or whenever he’s in the vicinity – and I agree.

角頭炙焼牛排 Cow Boss Taipei – Steak and Carbs

角頭炙焼牛排 Cow Boss Taipei – Steak and Carbs

Source: https://pacejmiller.wordpress.com/2010/01/29/raohe-night-market-in-taipei/

Raohe Night Market is one of the better night markets for food. The streets were lined with your Ye Shi foods of all kinds. We were trying to find a place where most locals queued up at. We stumbled past Cow Boss, which claims to have a “Boss Level” of deliciousness. It had a long line of Taiwanese locals. This piqued our interest and before long, we were in the restaurant.

Cow Boss
Cow Boss

Cow Boss is a very clean restaurant, a juxtaposition from the street stalls outside with its modern look.

Interior

The menu (http://cowboss.tw/menu/) showcased the many dishes that Cow Boss has, all at phenomenal value. For 150TWD(~S$6.60), I can get a steak with an egg and noodles with a starter dish of bread, with soup and drinks! I decided to go for the Signature Steak (260TWD/~S$11.35) while my friend went for their Grilled Fish Steak (180TWD/~S$7.80).

Boss

We were served their starter which was the Dinner Rolls. It was a surprising treat. The butter rolls were warm and filled with warm butter, that kept dripping, causing us to slurp it all up. It was a great palate-opener and I kept craving for more (which can be purchased at 20TWD) but decided to save my stomach space for the main dish.

There’s also free flow cream of mushroom soup and free dispensed drinks available for you to take. Paid glass-bottled drinks are also available.

The default done-ness of the beef was medium, but you can choose to have it your way by simply letting the waiter know. There were 5 sauce options: Black Pepper, Mushroom, Secret Grill, Garlic or Cheese Sauce. I went with the mushroom sauce. You also had the option of adding prawns or oysters with your meal.

I was very excited when my food came shortly after we finished the dinner rolls. It came sizzling on a hot plate with noodles, an egg and some veggies.

Cow Boss was also featured on the newspapers, as seen by this on their wall.

If you’re looking for toilets, they also have a very clean toilet in here. I guess it’s important to have a clean toilet if you’re in Taiwan because in some places, it’s not easy to find a toilet hahaha.

Overall, Cow Boss is one of the most value-for-money places in Taiwan to have steak. It’s not exactly a steakhouse, but it fulfills any cravings you have. At a phenomenally low price point, it’s a place I would definitely visit again when I’m bored of eating street food in Taiwan.

Revisiting 辛殿火锅 (Xindian Hotpot), the Best Steamboat In Taipei, Taiwan

Revisiting 辛殿火锅 (Xindian Hotpot), the Best Steamboat In Taipei, Taiwan

Looking for a Steamboat restaurant in Taipei with fresh, delicious beef, pork and lamb, as well as free flow bottled drinks and Haagan Dazs/Movenpick ice cream in a comfortable environment with clean toilets? Look no further. 辛殿火锅 (Xindian Hotpot) hits nail on the head as a steamboat restaurant which truly knows what a customer wants.

One of my most anticipated meals of this trip to Taipei was to Xindian Hot Pot. I visited 2 years ago and it left a deep impression on me as The Best Steamboat in Taipei, Taiwan, which is one of my most popular blog posts. I visited Xindian Pot twice in my 2 weeks in Taiwan.

Xin Dian Hot Pot, Taipei

I went there at 7:40PM on a Tuesday with 2 others. We made a reservation 2 days in advance. I highly recommend making a reservation at least a day in advance to avoid any disappointment. It was fully booked when we tried to make a reservation in the morning. They accept walk-ins if you are willing to wait.

As we approached the place, there was a long queue outside and the restaurant was crowded. It was even more crowded than I previously remembered. As a big group left, the entire staff cleaned and prepared the tables for the next group of customers very quickly.

I was excited to be back in here and was luckily given the table with the sofas! Just by having sofas, it makes the entire experience so much more comfortable, which makes you not want to leave.

The sauce station is the same as before. One of my favourite sauces is the XO sauce.

Within 2 years, the restaurant has not changed much. The area is still clean, and everything is the same as I’ve remembered. The menu has changed to offer more than before.

When you get seated, the staff will ask if you’ve been here before, and will bring the standard pot of soup to your table, a Yin Yang pot of Mala (Spicy) Soup and Chicken Soup. The Mala Soup comes with Blood Cake inside which you can eat or throw away if you don’t like it. It does not affect the soup taste. I came with a Taiwanese who thoroughly enjoyed the blood cake. This is one of my favourite mala soups around in steamboat establishments.

We started by ordering all the meats available. They have various types of beef, pork and lamb.

The top choice of the night was their 美国五花牛 (American 5-flower beef), which we ordered non-stop. It was not frozen. It’s easily cooked shabu-shabu style and dipping it with their XO sauce makes it easily the top dish of the night. It was impossible to be bored of it, even when we were full.

Another worthy mention was the 黑毛花猪 (Pork) which went well with both soups.

There was also a few unique dishes like the fish wonton, cheese ball and duck meat balls. It felt like a premium selection, and were all tastier than expected.

Some must-have dishes are the Wang Zi Mian/Prince Noodles (Taiwan’s instant noodles) and the 卤肠(Braised Intestine). 卤味can be seen everywhere in Taiwan with long queues, and it’s one of Taiwan’s iconic dishes. I was amazed at the 卤肠’s flavour while being mixed with the mala soup, making it spicy while retaining the 卤 taste.

Braised Intestine

The Wang Zi Mian tastes different from instant noodles you usually have, and is somehow extremely tasty with the mala soup. We ordered a few packets of it and stuffed ourselves.

There was also an impressive selection of seafood with Baby Squid, Scallops, fresh Lala(蛤蜊/clams) and Oysters. Yes, free flow oysters!! It was much bigger before cooking, like the size of raw oysters in international buffets.

From this post, I believe you can tell that we basically ordered everything non-stop haha but with 3 hungry guys in Taiwan, we were already trained to eat more than usual with the nightly Ye Shi visits.

Han Shi Fang (汉食坊) Steamboat, 331 Upper Paya Lebar

Han Shi Fang (汉食坊) Steamboat, 331 Upper Paya Lebar

My family loves spicy food. As a lover of mala and intensely spicy flavours, I actively seek out the best steamboat restaurants in Singapore as much as possible. I chanced upon Han Shi Fang (汉食坊) when I found out that the owner of this place was the ex-staff in my old favourite steamboat establishment.

The restaurant was small but had very attentive staff with good service. They also have a clean toilet and free wifi.

Interior
Interior

Han Shi Fang isn’t your regular buffet place where you keep ordering the same things over and over again. It’s a fully ala-carte restaurant, where you choose what you want and pay-per-dish. Initially, I thought that we would be spending a lot of money here. However, I found that we actually spent less, had better quality food and was generally very satisfied compared to buffet places which easily costs over $22.

Electronic Menu
Electronic Menu

The entire place seems really clean and proper, and the ordering process very easy with an iPad. Their menu has everything you would expect from a steamboat place; meats, seafood, veg etc. There are also premium dishes like crabs etc. They also have a BBQ plate attached to the steamboat pot, which we did not utilize as we just wanted the steamboat experience.

The special pot, with BBQ in the middle (optional).
The special pot, with BBQ in the middle (optional).

When we were seated, we were already introduced to the pot. The staff here mentioned that the pot was specially brought in from China, and the sides of the pot was made of a material that ensured that you would not get accidentally burnt. It seemed like a lot of attention was given to their crockery as everything was beautifully engraved with their logo.

We were also given complimentary side dishes, which appears to change once in awhile. We were served radish and fried potato, while previously we were given peanuts and beancurd skin.

Han Shi Fang differentiates itself from the competition by giving its customers an authentic Chinese Steamboat experience. Not only were all the staff Chinese, the utensils, pot, even beer and soups were also in a very original Chinese style – in a good way.

Yanjing Beer
Yanjing Beer. Non-alcoholic canned and house-brewed drinks are available.

The next thing I was impressed by was the sauces. We were given three different sauces – peanut sauce, their specialty chilli and curry powder.

Peanut Sauce, House-Special Chilli, Curry Powder
Peanut Sauce, House-Special Chilli, Curry Powder

I found myself using the chilli sauce and curry powder the most. The curry powder reminds you of the Maggi Curry powder, and both goes very well with their dishes.

We chose the Mala Soup, my personal favourite, and one recommended non-spicy soup, Chicken Soup, which is our usual benchmark for comparison among steamboat restaurants.

Chicken Soup/Mala Soup
Chicken Soup/Mala Soup

The chicken soup was tasty throughout the entire meal. I feel that it was generally better than most basic chicken soups in steamboat places I’ve been to. A plus point is that it stayed tasty and consistent throughout the meal, even with dishes being added. Not all places have soups of such strong flavour that retains until the end of the meal.

Their Mala Soup comes in varying levels of spiciness. Less Spicy, Normal, Medium Spicy and Extra Spicy. We usually go for Extra Spicy, but found that the levels of spiciness here is proportionate to the oil levels, so we ordered Medium Spicy, less oil (Which is suspect is normal spiciness). It was not overwhelmingly spicy but still very oily. The mala soup complemented their dishes really well, and tasted even better with more meat dishes being added in.

Fish slices, $6.

We started off with fish slices ($6). Tasted pretty ordinary like any other place, but presented nicely.

肥牛卷, Fat Beef Rolls. ($12 Small, $18 Medium)

All of us agreed that their best dish was the 肥牛卷, Fat Beef Rolls ($12 for small, $18 for medium). The beef was thinly sliced, making it cook really fast by simply swishing it into the hot soup a few times. It was delicious and complemented the sauces well. It was so good that we had to order it twice.

Mushroom Platter, $8.
Mushroom Platter, $8.

We also ordered the mushroom platter which serves a variety of mushrooms like Enoki (Golden) Musroom, White Beech Mushrooms, Oyster Mushrooms and King Oyster Mushroom. It was a good variety platter that is good for its price.

无花肉, Pork Belly. ($10)
无花肉, Pork Belly. ($10)

The pork belly, at $10, was another dish we enjoyed. It was definitely superior to the pork you get at other steamboat restaurants, and was a generous portion at $10.

Handmade Fishball, $5
Handmade Fishball, $5

Another highlight dish is their Handmade Fishballs ($5), which was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend ordering a large portion of fishballs. It was twice the size of regular Dodo fishballs, and had a springy consistency that is different from regular fishballs. It also did not harden if left to boil, and it was something that I ate the most among my family.

Handmade Noodles, $4.
Handmade Noodles, $4.

The handmade noodles was easily my dad and my favourite dish of the night. At only $4, they served 2 generous portions of noodles. The noodles did not harden or become soggy easily even with over-boiling, and I personally finished an entire portion myself. At only $4, this was incredible value with the amount of noodles they gave. A highly, highly recommended dish. The noodles go along well with both the mala and chicken soup. This picture alone makes me hungry and crave for the noodles!

Bill
Bill

There were so many dishes that we ordered that night, and Han Shi Fang offered such a large variety. Unfortunately we were so full by then that we closed the bill for the night, at $72.90 (~$18/pax) for 4. Usually, our bill is around $54 (~$13/pax), but we ordered extra that night.

In conclusion, Han Shi Fang is one of the greatest alternatives to your regular steamboat place. My family has steamboat 1-2x weekly, and Han Shi Fang remains a place that we visit at least once a month. With a clean environment and large variety of quality dishes at an extraordinarily low price, Han Shi Fang is easily one of the best value-for-money steamboat places in Singapore.

Yoogane Korea’s Fresh Cheese Chicken Galbi | Why You Should Visit Yoogane in Korea

Yoogane Korea’s Fresh Cheese Chicken Galbi | Why You Should Visit Yoogane in Korea

Credit: http://yoogane.co.kr/sub/menu0201.php

Yoogane is one of the most popular eating places in Seoul, and there are branches everywhere. It has chains all over Seoul, like in Myeongdong and Hongdae. It’s famous for it’s fried rice (bokkeum bap), and it even has a store in Singapore.

Fresh Cheese Chicken Galbi stood out to us on the Korean menu. It’s served different from your regular order at Yoogane – the hot plate is different, there’s meat in the middle and cheese surrounding the rims of the hot plate.

How it was served
How it was served

We were extremely excited and couldn’t wait for the cheese to melt. It took about 5 minutes to warm up and melt into its gooey goodness.

Melting cheese!!
Melting cheese!!

It felt like we were having a premium dish and people kept looking at our table. It was slightly more expensive (I can’t remember how much) but still affordable.

Stretchhhh
Stretchhhh

LOOK!! DAT STRETCHHHH. It’s like pizza cheese!! It does not come with rice or noodles but you can order it on the side. We ordered ramyeon (instant noodles) and rice. I don’t think you’ll be full if you don’t order at least rice to add in.

We actually finished half the cheese before the noodles were cooked.

YUMMMM
The addictive chewiness of the cheezu

This is one of those dishes where you just want to eat again.. and again. Overall, I find it pretty normal and just like any other Yoogane sets, but LOOK. AT. ALL. DAT. CHEEEZE. Ugh makes me crave it again.

Fresh Cheese Cuttlefish Chicken Galbi

There’s also a squid + chicken version for people who prefer that. This is also available in Singapore.

I’d also like to note that generally, Yoogane is much cheaper in Korea compared to Singapore, so if you’re in Korea, this is most definitely one of the places that you should try out.

Jeju Island’s Famous Jjampong – Cheon Geum Ban Jeom 천금반점

Jeju Island’s Famous Jjampong – Cheon Geum Ban Jeom 천금반점

Jeju Island is known not only for the famous Black Pork, but also its fresh seafood. There’s an extremely famous Jjampong (spicy seafood noodle soup) place in Jeju Island called 감사합니다. We were speaking to our tour guide about how we wanted to eat Jjampong and he strongly recommended that we come here.

Credit: http://jeju.noriter.net/25

I’m actually surprised by how little this place is covered online. I can only find Korean blogs talking about it and no foreigners blogging about this. I guess it shows that this place is a really rare find, or maybe people just focus on black pork when they go to Jeju haha. If you love seafood, read on.

If you’ve seen my previous post on the spiciest Jjampong in Korea, you’ll know that I’m a lover of Spicy Food, especially Jjampong.

20150223_192536

When we stepped in, we were greeted by celebrity signatures plastered all over the walls. We went off-season to Jeju where the restaurants and streets were reallyyy empty, but this place still had people visiting.

Menu
Menu

I ordered Jjampong (5500KRW), while my brother ordered the Pepper Jjampong (6000KRW) and the girls went with Jajangmyeon (4000KRW). Not covering the Jajangmyeon ‘cos it was pretty normal to me. Typical offerings from a Chinese Restaurant in Korea.

Jjampong (5,500KRW)
Jjampong (5,500KRW)

We were expecting the ordinary Jjampong ingredients (like in Seoul) we were SURPRISED when we saw how generous the toppings were.

Like, jaw dropping surprised. At approx S$6.50, this bowl is INCREDIBLE value.

Each bowl consisted of:
1. A generous portion of noodles & beansprout
2. 1 whole crab(!!!) sliced into 2
3. 1 whole squid
4. A few mussels

LOOK! A WHOLE CRAB!!
LOOK! A WHOLE CRAB!!

The bowl of Jjampong came with scissors and tongs for you to eat the seafood more easily. It also came with an extra empty bowl for you to eat your seafood/dump the seafood there as it really piles up on top of the noodles.

In contrast to my brother’s order of Pepper Jjampong, mine looks ridiculously awesome due to the insane amount of toppings. His had the normal toppings which you see everywhere. Just like any other bowl, just spicier. It was pretty spicy, but cannot be compared to the spiciest Jjampong in Korea which I had in Seoul.

Featured on the papers
Featured on the papers

Damn, even as I’m writing this post, I’m really craving for it right now. They also have Oysters Jjampong (6500KRW), Abalone Jjampong (8000KRW) etc. The next time I go, I’ll definitely try the Abalone Jjampong. Only 8000KRW!!

Quality promise

It’s also healthy to eat here. Above picture:

“We use original bay salt which contains enormous minerals, and soup boiled with chicken, cow bones, some Korean medical herbs so our dishes are delicious and also good for health.

Additionally, nationally authorized chef cooks our dishes to make the best flavour. We will continuously try to make good foods for our health -Thank you-

This place is for the true seafood lover. In comparison to Singapore, the seafood given is REALLY generous, fresh and cheap.
